According to Ukrainian folk legend, the fate of the world depends on the creation of Pysanky. If this custom is forsaken, evil (characterised by a huge serpent, chained for eternity) will overrun the world. The making of Pysanky is said to strengthen the serpent's chains, keeping evil in check for another year.

Ukrainische Volkslegende
Eine ukrainische Volkslegende erzählt, dass das Schicksal der Welt mit dem Schreiben des Pysankys verbunden ist. Wenn niemand mehr Pysanky schreibt, die Bösheit (eine Schlange in Ketten) wird die Welt überwältigen. Das Schreiben der Pysanky soll die Ketten um die Bösheit stärken und hält sie noch ein Jahr fest.
